Day 69 - The long road home

The morning got off to an early start with, egad what was that, an alarm clock!  We wandered downstairs for an excellent breakfast, probably one of the best hotel buffet breakfasts I can remember.  It had honeydew, eggs, freshly made salsa, good pastries, yogurt, the works.

We ate, but we didn't delay because we had to packed them up and head to the airport.  Fortunately, Amy had picked a hotel very close to the airport which was good because we ended up running a bit late.  Thankfully, especially with TSA Pre-check, Salt Lake City security was very fast and they were soon at their gate.

After dropping them off, I headed back to the hotel and grabbed a little second breakfast (it was just so good!).  Then I packed up the room remembering to fill the cooler with ice, but forgetting my beer and the leftovers - D’oh!  And pretty soon I too was on my way home.

My day was a fairly uneventful day.  It was the opposite of a zero day though with over 400 miles of driving.  Once I was out of the Salt Lake City airport, the drive got very boring with very few things except what was moving down I-80 which included.

  • Giant dump truck parts

  • TANKS!  Military tanks

  • A BART transit train bound for San Francisco

  • Various windmill parts

  • No wildlife to speak of - where have all the Pronghorn gone?

After a long drive, I stopped in the Medicine Bow National Forest.  I was super excited because I thought I had gotten the last first come first serve site.  This was ALMOST accurate.  I had gotten the last first come first serve site that didn’t have a tag on it.  However, there were lots of tags that had previous dates  and reserved sites that didn’t have a tag on them.  So, I had backed into a VERY tight location that was full of someone else’s trash for no reason.  Oh well, it was still a very nice site.  Not a terrible way to spend the evening.

After getting the camper set up, I went to go fill up with water - it was an actual working well pump!  Then a friendly camper came up and gave me the advice that the water there was terrible and I should just go to the visitor center to fill up.  Since I wanted to dump off the garbage from whoever stayed at the site prior to me, that’s what I did.

At the visitor center, there was a huge Abe Lincoln monument.

Apparently I was at the highest point of the Lincoln highway and so they had erected a monument there.  I had also planned to drop off the recycling that I had collected on the trip, but alas there were only garbage cans - no recycling.  Shame on you Wyoming.

I went back to camp, had some dinner, and got ready for bed.  It was QUIET as I fell asleep with the walls open.
