Day 64 - Just another transfer day
Today was a day that would include a LOT of driving as we made the long jump over to Yellowstone. So, naturally we slept in, this time until 8. We’re back into camping mode so we had a breakfast of pancakes and oatmeal for breakfast. Unfortunately, the refrigerator of the trailer failed us so we had to throw out 8 eggs. We’ve done well to not waste any food on the trip, but this just grinds on me. Oh well, I’ll just have to do some investigating on the fridge when I get home.
Sebastian couldn’t stop raving about the town of Waterton Lakes and really wanted to go back (he’s actually talking about moving to Canada regularly!). Since our pass was still good, Amy and the boys packed up and headed into town to walk around. They enjoyed it and met a HUGE, friendly dog named Barnaby. In the meantime, I did some camper maintenance and then packed it up. Just as I was putting the camper down, they returned from town - great timing!
We hooked up Dover and headed south and back into the USA into a new state - Montana!. The border crossing had a short line and, despite once again having a couple of pieces of produce (this time a few oranges), we were allowed back into the country again. Welcome back to the USA.
Our drive took us through the correctly nicknamed Big Sky country of Montana. It was VERY empty with long stretches of road without anybody visible. There were plenty of cows though. Scenery wise, there were beautiful looking rolling hills as we traveled down the eastern edge of the Rockies. Eventually we got onto an interstate - I-15. Amazingly though, there were still no cars!
We rolled through Helena (another capitol on the trip!), turned off the paved road (literally) and continued about 15 miles to our working ranch AirBnB for the night in Clancy, MT. It was an old house, but it worked great for us. It had everything we needed (bedrooms and kitchen) as well as bonus stuff we didn’t need (DVD player and a piano!).
While Amy and the boys stayed back, I headed back on the unpaved road to Helena for some laundry and groceries. Again, I had learned my lesson on laundromats and checked out the reviews before I picked one. It was in a rough part of Helena near railroad tracks, but was a terrific place. As a bonus, it was under a 5 minute drive to Walmart which enabled me to get efficient with my time!
I started the washer and then went over to Walmart. At Walmart I put all the non-fridge/freezer items needed in a cart and then parked the cart down a remote aisle while I went to move the laundry to the dryer. Then I went back to Walmart to finish the shopping. Unfortunately, someone (or likely multiple people) had picked over ALL the cheese pizzas at Walmart. We had planned to do an oven pizza, but there weren’t any cheese ones. So, I ordered a pizza from the local pizza shop (Village Inn). Then I checked out, drove over and picked up the laundry, grabbed the pizza I had ordered, and drove back to camp (a different route, but also off the paved road and this way was surprisingly even more winding!).
I got back to the house to find that Amy and the boys had been learning some card games while i was gone. There was a lot of cackling and laughter when I got in so apparently the new card games were a hit. I guess I’ll have to learn them in the future.
The day finished with lots of piano playing and showers before enjoying the comforts of an actual mattress for bed!
