Day 52 - A long overdue recovery day

Last night was tough for everybody (but me) to sleep.  While it was Sunday, it felt like another weekend night in camp.  It also didn’t help that the Log Cabin Resort is full of lights that stay on throughout the entire night.  On the bright side (pun intended), we woke to a light rain (very unlike the Antelope Island hurricane from a month or so ago) gently landing on the roof of the camper.

I had woken up at 4 AM and came to the realization of just how hard we’ve been pushing for so many weeks.  So, when everybody was asked what they wanted to do on a day that we knew was going to be rainy, we decided to do what, in hiking terms, would be called a “zero” day and really take it easy.  To have a fully enjoyable day, we naturally started the morning with the perfect fat/sugar combination known as donuts!  As we ate, the skies started to lighten and the rain actually stopped for a bit.

We used this time to walk up to the lodge with the intention of playing some of their board games.  Once there, nobody could pick a game that they wanted so the boys ended up playing stacking games with the board game pieces while Amy and I took care of some errand related stuff.

Unfortunately, we still couldn’t get much done online so we decided that between this and the desire for a few groceries, a trip to Port Angeles was in order.

After a fair bit of continued stacking, we put their games away and started for Port Angeles.  After filling up with gas, we went to their local library.  They were selling kids books 10 for $1!  So, we traded in some of ours and bought some of theirs.  In the mean time we used their WiFi to both take care of some needed online bills and get some downloaded shows for the rainy day.

After a soup and sandwich lunch, we spent the afternoon relaxing in the camper as the rain returned.  Amy and Robinson played cards while Seb read and I listened to a story.  It was never windy, but at times the rain came down fairly heavy.  At some point in the afternoon, the whole camp lost power (something that’s actually hard for us to tell since we don’t use a lot of 120V power).  We had planned to have pizza at the lodge that night, but it turned out the power outage was related to a tree falling on the wires so we needed a new option. Amy whipped up some mashed potatoes, bacos, and cheese with beans and carrots.  It’s not a combination you’d see on a menu, but it was delicious.

After dinner we went up to the Spruce Railroad trail for a hike.  It turned out to be a paved hike, but still was worth the hike.  It included a tunnel that we could walk through as well as the Devil’s punch bowl which was a spot in the lake that got deep FAST and apparently could be used for cliff diving.  It was cold and raining so we passed on that and just took some pictures.  However, the best part of the hike was hunting for the wildlife.  We were looking for banana slugs and newts and while there weren’t any early, Amy found a bunch before the rest of us finally got our eyes on and could spot them too.  In total, we counted at least 12 banana slugs (3 in one spot!) and 6 newts with a bonus toad, squirrel, and small bird to add.  Great hike.

We returned to camp (power was back on) and watched a few of the shows we had gotten earlier before heading to bed.
