Day 32 - Seeing the largest tree in the world!

The cool mountain air worked well for everybody to sleep.  It was crisp as we woke up to start the day.  While getting a bit repetitive, we had oatmeal and grits for breakfast.  After breakfast Sebastian enjoyed the wilderness of camp, especially all the wildflowers that were blooming around us.

Our first sightseeing spot of the day was to visit the #1 largest tree in the world (by volume), General Sherman.

We hit a rough patch while there as the length of our vacation seemed to be taking its toll.  However, we eventually rallied and headed over to the Forest Giant Museum.  The crowds had shown back up (it’s the 4th of July after all) so there were no spots left.  We ended up going down the road a bit to one of the turnouts - this worked just fine.

From the museum, we hopped onto the shuttle to Moro Rock.  The hike up to Moro Rock was steep, but entertaining.  Robinson was imagining himself as a rock hyrax and discovered all the various hiding places on the way to the top.  The view of the top was well worth the hike, a spectacular view of the High Sierras.  We had packed a lunch and so we sat down on the top of Moro Rock to enjoy lunch.  As we enjoyed our lunch in the shade of the rock, we looked down into the valley and watched the “parades” of cars going through the park.

We came back down the steps of Moro Rock to wait for the shuttle.  While waiting for it, Robinson discovered a puppy in a bag and Sebastian spotted a wild deer walking by.

Eventually it was our turn for the shuttle to take us back to the museum.  While there are no trees you can drive through, the famous “Tunnel Log” remains in the park for viewing.  It’s another massive tree that doesn’t decay and so for over 100 years, people have been taking pictures of it.

We arrived back at the Forest Giant Museum and got to see another famous sequoia - the Sentinel.

Once back at camp, we found that the sun had done its thing and completely recharged our generator.  I went for a walk an encountered more deer and got to see a couple of waterfalls.  While I was gone, Robinson snacked, climbed on rock, and prepared for fire.  Sebastian just relaxed with his story (finished Battle for the Labyrinth) and enjoyed his new, soft, warm Minions blankets.  For dinner, we found out that discount grocery store quality may not be what we desired.  We had Mac & Cheese, peas, corn - all below grade

After dinner, Robinson started the fire on his own.  He’s continuing to learn how to put new logs on the fire without throwing them or burning his hands.  He’s definitely going to be our fire master.

As the sun set and the stars came out, I took a couple of deep breaths to just enjoy the cool crisp mountain air and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime we are on.  It felt amazing.
