Day 1 - 2025 East Coast Adventure - On the Road Again
7/18 - Raleigh to Chesapeake
Well, we're underway, but no thanks to me. I SIGNIFICANTLY underestimated all the things left to do to get underway this evening. I started the day with maintenance on the camper (always best to do the day of travel) and then worked my way to other activities. However, when Amy got home, there was still a LOT of material that had not been packed in either Rover or Dover. As such, our packing became more of a "throw it all in the camper and figure it out later". And, in an auspicious start to the day, this new technique was done in the middle of a random downpour.
Since we were now starting in the middle of Friday rush hour, we learned that there was traffic on our route. So we diverted and got a tour of eastern Wake county. I can say that corn looks good, but the beans look GREAT. Given the potential, this start to the trip turned out to be a really nice way to start the drive. We were cruising along on 64, which had surprisingly low traffic, when I got a call from the state park. I'm grateful they called because apparently there's a gate that closes at 7 pm and we were NOT going to make it by then. Fortunately, there is a code and they gave it to us.
We continued on 64 which took us East to 17 north and into northeast North Carolina. We drove through pockets of rain the whole way, but avoided one downpour that we watched out to the southeast for part of the trip. As we crossed the Pamlico River Sound, a rainbow greeted us! That's how to start a trip like this!
We stopped in Elizabeth city to grab some pizza and then continued to camp at Northwest River. We arrived in the dark (and I mean DARK) to an unusually empty campground. Amy helped give directions for us to back in by holding a flashlight because there was NO light to give directions with. Tomorrow we'll have to explore more of camp, but for now, we plugged in, turned on the A/C (grateful it worked), and tried to get to sleep before the storm hits.

Mileage on the trip - 203
# States - 2
