Day 51 - Making an Olympic effort at tourism
Well, a hope for a good night of sleep did not pay off. We had some “dudes” in the camp next to us and they were some very loud talkers. There was also a horn that would go off at consistent intervals (every ~15 seconds). We decided that it was a foghorn, but it made it hard to get to sleep or get back to sleep. We eventually all got some sleep, but it wasn’t the best.
To start the day, we decided to drive into Westport and get some donuts, fill up the tank, and generally see the town. We found a GREAT donut shop and while they didn’t have exactly what Robinson wanted, they made him a special one that was a) HUGE and b) right up his alley.
After the stop at the donut shop, we went up the observation tower of the town so we could see the ocean.
Then we headed back to camp and saw 4 deer as we went. The boys then went back to the lounge and started to watch the original Despicable Me. I did some repairs on the cabinets for the sink - the screws had fallen out with all the vibrations from driving) while Amy got us ready to go. Rob walked inside and asked if he could take a sand dollar and they told us that he could, but that there would be plenty more on the beach if we went out there. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time for beach exploration there.
We started our long day of driving and made our first stop in the Quinalt rain forest. We did a short nature hike that included more gigantic trees, a snake, but more exciting for us, our first banana slug! After the hike, we did a short drive over to the lake for a picnic lunch.
We tried to make one more stop at Ruby beach, but because it was a weekend, it was extremely crowded again so we had to skip it since there was no place to put Rover, much less Dover and Rover. So we made it to camp and realized that this park is HUGE. It’s multiple hours for us to get from camp at the Log Cabin campground to other places in the park. I guess we’ll have to plan strategically for what we try to see.
At camp the boys went down to the lake and creek and some brave deer actually made an appearance pretty close. There were a lot of dogs in camp (5 in the campers across the street alone!) so Robinson spent some time getting to know the furry camp companions. One thing we didn’t have was internet service so we walked over to the lodge. Unfortunately, their WiFi was pretty slow so that was a bust. We’ll have to do something else tomorrow if we really want internet.
We found our way back to the camper. I was exhausted for some reason and climbed into bed before 9:00. Amy entertained the boys with some cards and some reading before eventually they too called it a night.
